The history of Luriano, a small village in the Val di Merse, is closely linked to the figure of San Galgano and the medieval origins of the area. The parish church of Luriano dates back to at least the 12th century, reflecting its ancient roots and development over the centuries. The village is also associated with Galgano Guidotti, a local knight and saint, who converted and had a religious building constructed, in which he stuck his sword as a sign of his vocation and conversion.
The territory of Luriano developed during the Lombard period, with historical evidence of a settlement dating back to Lombard rule in Tuscany between 568 and 569, and the village retains significant medieval and religious elements. The church of Santa Maria a Luriano, mentioned as early as the 12th century, is a fundamental historical site that bears witness to its ancient origins and subsequent structural transformations.
